Dehydrated Skin? Here's How You Can Help
Does your skin ever get dry and flaky? Wondering how you can help? The secret is: Get into a consistent skincare routine that works for your type of skin.
Well, what's the difference between dry and dehydrated skin?
Dry skin is one that lacks oil. It is usually a result of genetics. Dehydrated skin, is a skin condition where our skin lacks water. When our skin is running low on water, it’ll produce more oil to make up for it. This is why many of us experience dry patches or even breakouts when we have dehydrated skin.
Dehydrated skin occurs as we do not get enough water. It can also come from a dry climate, the environment, our diet or sometimes our stress level. Our skin depends on an outer layer of cells and lipids (called a “skin barrier”) to protect the skin and keep it hydrated and healthy. Over-exfoliating and dehydration can compromise the health of that barrier so harshly that some people can even develop sensitive skin.
As there are so many factors that may contribute to dehydrated skin, it is important to ensure that we give our skin the necessary tools to quench its thirst and rebuild. We must take care of it and hydrate it!
Top 3 tips to help with dehydrated skin:
01. CLEANSE
Make sure you use products that do not irritate your skin. Take all of your makeup off and do not go to bed with makeup on.
2. EAT FOODS RICH IN WATER
This means lots of veggies and fruits like celery, cucumbers, cantaloupe, zucchini, and watermelon.
3. HYDRATE
Drinking water is the obvious, but making sure you choose and layer the right products onto your face is important. Start from the most watery consistencies (toners), and finish with the least watery (serums). Following a multi-layer approach will really allow the ingredients to sink in.
